Obama
on the campaign trail;
“The
problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight
years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name
of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion
dollars for the first 42 presidents -- number 43 added $4 trillion
dollars by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion dollars
of debt that we are going to have to pay back -- $30,000 for every
man, woman and child,” Obama said on July 3, 2008, at a campaign
event in Fargo, N.D.
"Washington's
failure to lead on energy," which was "turning the
middle-class squeeze into a devastating vise-grip for millions of
Americans."
"For
the well-off in this country," Obama said in May 2008, "high
gas prices are mostly an annoyance, but to most Americans they're a
huge problem, bordering on a crisis."
Obama
in the Senate;
"The
fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit
is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government
cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing
financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our
Government’s reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America’s
debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means
that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the
burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and
Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of
leadership. Americans deserve better."
SENATOR
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, MARCH 2006
Obama as President;
"Today
I'm pledging to cut the deficit we inherited by half by the end of my
first term in office. Now, this will not be easy. It will require us
to make difficult decisions and face challenges we've long neglected.
But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot
repay, and that means taking responsibility right now, in this
administration, for getting our spending under control."
